Growing 1 (Littmann PP. 88-89) by Keith Haring stretches a single red figure into a many-limbed form against a flat yellow ground, short radiating lines crowning the head, green dotted patterning grounding the composition at the base.

The multiplication of limbs is the whole idea. Rather than depicting one body in a single pose, Haring overlays several positions of the same figure into one continuous outline, closer to a piece of signage or a hieroglyph than to a conventional portrait — a register he leaned on throughout the Growing series, where repetition stood in for motion, growth and transformation all at once. The title points toward biological change directly, and the stacked, multiplying limbs read as a figure caught mid-development rather than mid-dance, growth treated as something almost architectural. Made in 1988, the print continues Haring's long-running interest in pictographic systems, from ancient hieroglyphics to the reduced, instantly legible logos of contemporary advertising, treating the human body the way a brand treats its mark: built to be recognised before it's fully looked at.
