Growing 1–5, 1988 is a complete portfolio of five screenprints by Keith Haring, published in editions of 100. Created during the final years of the artist's career, the series showcases Haring's ability to develop a single idea across multiple compositions while maintaining the immediacy and visual impact for which his work is celebrated.

Across the portfolio, Haring subjects his familiar figures to a process of continual reinvention. Individual bodies merge into larger formations, expand into decorative patterns and evolve into increasingly intricate arrangements. Each print possesses its own distinct identity, ranging from ascending, totemic structures and sprawling figurative webs to highly ordered, symmetrical compositions that fill the picture plane with remarkable precision.

Colour plays a central role throughout the series. Bold combinations of yellow, red, blue, green, orange and black create a sequence of visually distinct images, each carefully balanced despite the apparent spontaneity of Haring's drawing style. The portfolio demonstrates the artist's growing confidence as a printmaker, using screenprinting not merely as a means of reproduction but as a medium capable of producing works of extraordinary clarity and intensity.

Viewed together, the five prints reveal Haring's fascination with repetition and variation. Recurring motifs become architectural frameworks, symbolic emblems, ceremonial arrangements and animated chains of movement, reflecting the versatility of a visual language that Haring had refined over more than a decade.

Today, Growing 1–5 stands among the most ambitious print portfolios of Haring's career. Combining technical sophistication with some of his most inventive imagery, the series demonstrates how a limited repertoire of forms could generate an extraordinary range of compositions while remaining unmistakably the work of a single artist.
