Keith Haring

Growing 2 (Littmann P. 90), 1988 forms part of Keith Haring's Growing series, a group of five screenprints produced during the final years of the artist's career. Built from Haring's familiar humanoid figures, the composition expands across the surface through a network of interconnected bodies rendered in yellow, red, green and blue. Radiating lines animate the figures, creating a sense of movement and energy throughout the image.
Where Growing 1 is organised around a vertical, totem-like structure, Growing 2 spreads laterally across the composition. Figures link arms, legs and torsos to create an intricate web of connections that extends in multiple directions. No single figure dominates the image. Instead, each body depends upon the others, producing a composition that emphasises cooperation, continuity and collective strength.
The work demonstrates Haring's ongoing interest in creating a visual language that could be understood across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The interconnected forms recall the appearance of pictographs or hieroglyphics, transforming simple figures into symbols that communicate through their relationships with one another. Throughout the Growing series, Haring explored how repeated forms could generate increasingly complex images while remaining immediately accessible.
Created in 1988, Growing 2 reflects Haring's belief in community and shared human experience. The composition rejects isolation in favour of connection, presenting growth not as an individual process but as something achieved through participation in a larger whole. The result is one of the most ambitious and visually engaging works from the Growing series.
