Growing 4 (Littmann P. 91) by Keith Haring forms part of Haring’s Growing series, where figures are organised into continuous structures that extend across the series conceptually and across each of the five works in the portfolio. Growing 4 centres on a crowned figure whose limbs extend outward to connect with surrounding forms, each outlined in Haring’s characteristic thick black line.
The figures interweave to create a tightly packed mandala-like structure, forming pathways across the image. Yellow dominates the work, punctuated by a single red dot at the centre, establishing a focal point within the otherwise restrained palette.
Created in 1988, the work develops the logic of the Growing series further, moving toward a more compressed and intricate arrangement - similar structures appear within Haring’s earlier works including Untitled (Red and Green) and Untitled (Yellow).
Despite the complexity of the arrangement, the work retains the immediacy that defines Haring’s career, with bold contour and high contrast ensuring the image remains direct and legible. As part of the Growing series, the work extends Haring’s use of repeated figural elements to construct larger structures, shifting from vertical and distributed arrangements toward a more compact and unified field. Growing 4 fixes this structure around a central point, where contrast and radiating lines give the image its clarity and force.
