Retrospect (Colour) by Keith Haring is a monumental work of twenty-four individual squares each containing a distinct artwork or motif Haring created during his career.

Each square operates as an independent vignette while contributing to the broader rhythm of the overall piece. Dancing figures, crawling babies, barking dogs and embracing couples appear in shifting combinations across the grid, their bold black outlines filled with intense reds, yellows, blues and greens. Radiating lines surrounding many of the figures reinforce the sense of movement and vitality that runs throughout the work, allowing energy to move visually from one panel to the next despite the compartmentalised structure.

The work celebrates Haring’s imagery which had become widely recognisable across both popular culture and the contemporary art world. By assembling his recurring symbols within a single expansive format, Retrospect (Colour) reads almost as a visual archive of the motifs that became synonymous with his practice.

Retrospect (Colour) does not introduce new iconography, but instead reconfigures established motifs into a cohesive structure that documents his practice and output. The title itself reinforces this reflective quality, positioning the work as a concentrated presentation of the imagery that defined his public identity as an artist.

Retrospect (Colour) brings together the symbols, figures and rhythmic structures that shaped Haring’s art within a single expansive work. The work celebrates the collective familiarity of his imagery while demonstrating the flexibility, clarity and enduring legacy of one of the most distinctive visual vocabularies of the late twentieth century.
