Retrospect (Black & White) (Littmann PP. 120–121) by Keith Haring is a huge grid of twenty-four individual works containing some of the artist’s most beloved imagery and celebrates the imagery and motifs that endured Haring to both the public and artworld.

The work functions as both a concentrated document and celebration of the motifs that defined Haring’s practice throughout the 1980s, bringing together many of his most recognisable images within one large scale work.

Retrospect (Black & White) reconfigures established motifs into a unified work that emphasises and celebrates the continuity across his practice. The work also recalls sources that informed Haring’s development, including comic strips, graphic design and forms of sequential visual communication. Retrospect operates not only as a reflection on his career, but also as an affirmation of the accessibility, immediacy and collective recognition that made his imagery resonate so widely across popular and contemporary culture both at the time and in the present day.
