Pop Shop III (D) (Littmann P. 145) is the final work in the Pop Shop III Set and features a characteristic Haring figure seemingly peering into a silver machine. Haring’s Pop Shop works became some of his most well-known and well-collected works. The sets, featuring four panels, unfold like comic books, creating a series of snapshops into a story. In Pop Shop III we see Haring exploring the disappearance of one of his famed figures. As the works unfold Haring explores the Japanese three wise monkeys proverb “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” as the figures in the set appear to either save or feed a figure into a machine.
The final work, plate D, appears to show a figure looking into the machine trying to find the other figure. Produced at the time of the AIDS crises, the work can be read as a critique into the marginalisation and ignorance that those suffering and disappearing form the diseases tragically faced.
Works from the Pop Shop series remain among the most recognisable and culturally significant prints of Haring’s career precisely because they collapse distinctions between fine art, advertising, street imagery and popular culture so effortlessly. Pop Shop III (D) captures the raw energy of the artist and his commitment to socially important causes and using his voice and platform to promote both awareness and change.
