Pop Shop III (Littmann PP. 144–145) by Keith Haring is a four-panel set in the artist's signature style: bold black contour lines, saturated colour fields and instantly recognisable figures. Across the four plates, a narrative unfolds—part comic strip, part allegory—in which Haring's stock figures interact with a looming silver machine, alternately feeding into it, being cut by giant scissors, covering their eyes, ears and mouths, and finally searching for what has vanished inside it.

Produced in 1989, near the height of the AIDS crisis, the set reads as a sustained meditation on disappearance, complicity and silence. The recurring machine motif suggests both salvation and erasure, the ambiguous power individuals and institutions hold to either protect or abandon those at risk. The middle panel's gesture of covering eyes, ears and mouth invokes the Japanese proverb of the three wise monkeys, which Haring repeatedly deployed elsewhere in his work as shorthand for societal denial and the stigma surrounding AIDS. The final panel, showing a figure peering into the machine in search of its missing companion, closes the sequence on a note of loss and unanswered searching.

This thematic charge sits within Haring's broader practice of using accessible, mass-producible imagery to address urgent social issues, from apartheid to the crack epidemic to HIV/AIDS. The Pop Shop project itself, conceived as a retail space selling affordable multiples, embodied his conviction that art should circulate freely outside the gallery system, collapsing boundaries between fine art, street imagery, advertising and pop culture. Silkscreen, with its associations with commercial reproduction and repetition, was the natural vehicle for this philosophy, letting potent imagery travel as widely and quickly as the messages it carried.

Together, the four plates of Pop Shop III stand among the most affecting and sought-after works of Haring's later career, pairing visual immediacy with profound social commentary.
