Flowers 4 (Littmann P. 167) by Keith Haring combines botanical forms, geometric structures and flowing organic imagery within a densely animated silkscreen, set against an intense red background.

Here, flowers no longer function as decorative still-life subjects but as animated systems of movement charged with the same phallic ambiguity that defines the series: looping curves, repeated bulbous forms and interwoven structures suggest growth and threat in the same gesture. The uninterrupted red ground gives the image a visceral, almost bodily heat that distinguishes it from the cooler palettes of Flowers 1 and 2.

Haring removes atmospheric depth and tonal modelling entirely here, relying instead on contrast, repetition and bold graphic organisation, so that the emotional weight of the print rests on colour saturation alone rather than on any illustrated narrative. Produced in the same concentrated burst of work that closed out his career, Flowers 4 pushes the series’ underlying tension — between celebration and physical vulnerability — furthest toward the latter, with almost no passage of the composition left uncharged.
