Flowers 5 (Littmann P. 167) by Keith Haring centres on a large orange floral form that expands across an intense red ground, its thick looping black contour lines giving the petals a sense of movement rather than stillness.

Alongside the larger structure, smaller yellow elements introduce balance and visual interruption, creating a composition that feels constantly shifting despite its relatively simple arrangement. As the final print in the series, Flowers 5 resolves the tension built across the preceding four plates into something closer to acceptance: the phallic vocabulary is still present in the form’s structure, but the surrounding threats — the chain in Flowers 2, the perforations of Flowers 3, the saturated heat of Flowers 4 — have receded, leaving a single dominant form standing largely alone.

Haring reduces the flower into an animated graphic sign built from repeated curves and expanding shapes rather than depicting it naturalistically, retaining the directness of his subway drawings while working in a more fluid, organic register than the compressed figurative structures of his earlier career.
