Angel from White Icons (Littmann P. 173) by Keith Haring reinterprets one of Haring’s recurring symbolic figures through an entirely white embossed surface.

Removing the saturated colour and sharp graphic contrast typically associated with his imagery, the work relies instead on relief, shadow and shifting light to construct the angelic form, giving the work an unusually quiet and atmospheric presence.

The winged figure appears with arms extended outward beneath a halo-like burst of radiant marks, its contours pressed directly into the paper rather than defined through ink alone. As light moves across the embossed surface, the image gradually emerges and recedes, allowing the raised lines and forms to shift subtly in visibility depending on angle and illumination.

This changing surface quality introduces a delicate physicality that differs dramatically from the direct visual impact of Haring’s brightly coloured silkscreens and murals. The angel motif circulated throughout Haring’s work during the 1980s, often functioning as a symbol of protection, elevation or spiritual energy within his wider symbolic universe. In the White Icons series, however, the image takes on a markedly different emotional register. Isolated against the blank background and reduced to embossed contour alone, the figure acquires a more meditative and contemplative quality whilst retaining the rhythmic movement associated with Haring’s broader.

Angel, from White Icons, occupies a singular position within Haring’s later print work, demonstrating how effectively his imagery could function through reduction and restraint alone. Through embossed line, shifting shadow and minimal means, the work transforms one of Haring’s most recognisable motifs into a work of remarkable stillness and subtle intensity.
