Blueprint Drawing 4 (Littmann P. 177) by Keith Haring compresses an array of disconnected scenes, symbols and recurring characters into a tightly framed arrangement of boxed images surrounding an empty central field.

The work adopts the visual syntax of comics, instructional diagrams and broadcast screens whilst reorganising Haring’s familiar imagery into a fragmented sequence of abrupt visual encounters. Cars collide, figures crawl, dogs bark and bodies tumble across isolated compartments positioned around the work’s perimeter. Rather than directing the viewer through a clear linear narrative, the work operates through interruption and visual collision, forcing the eye to jump unpredictably between separate incidents. The empty centre intensifies this instability, creating a void-like pause around which the imagery circulates almost restlessly.

The repeated boxed framing further reinforces associations with television monitors, newspaper strips and urban information systems, all of which deeply informed Haring’s understanding of public image-making during the 1980s. Many of the motifs appearing throughout the work had already become foundational to Haring’s world by the end of the decade. Crawling infants, barking dogs, radiant marks and simplified dancing figures recur throughout the print, yet the fragmented arrangement alters their usual emotional register.

Blueprint Drawing 4 reveals Haring pushing his symbolic imagery into a more fractured and psychologically unsettled direction during the final phase of career. Through compartmentalised framing, abrupt visual sequencing and stark monochrome contrast, the work converts familiar motifs into an unstable field of movement, tension and interruption.
