Keith Haring

Blueprint Drawing 3(Littmann P. 176) by Keith Haring unfolds through four separate framed scenes that move between science-fiction imagery, crowd movement and implied catastrophe.
The work extends Haring’s interest in sequential imagery, using compartmentalised panels to create shifting narrative fragments rather than a single unified work. The upper section introduces two contrasting moments: a hovering flying saucer projecting a beam downward beside a procession of running and falling figures moving across a dotted background. Below, figures appear jumping over one another whilst the final panel is dominated by a dramatic descending form crashing into a patterned circular structure.
The Blueprint Drawings series marked a significant departure from the saturated chromatic intensity associated with many of Haring’s murals and Pop Shop works. Here, black contour alone carries the full work, forcing greater attention onto pacing, spacing and directional movement. The cream paper background softens the starkness slightly, introducing an atmosphere closer to reproduced print ephemera, technical illustration or underground zine graphics than polished contemporary printmaking.
Haring’s familiar dancing figures and crawling bodies remain direct, yet the surrounding atmosphere feels markedly less celebratory than many earlier works, introducing tension through repetition, interruption and implied threat. Blueprint Drawing 3 reveals Haring experimenting with narrative sequencing in a far more fractured and cinematic way than in his earlier all-over works.
