Keith Haring

Blueprint Drawing 9 (Littmann P. 179) by Keith Haring condenses scenes of confrontation, domination and physical struggle into three sharply separated panels rendered entirely in black line and dotted patterning.
Produced in 1990 as a screenprint, the work revisits imagery and devices Haring had explored throughout the 1980s, but reframes them within a far harsher and more psychologically charged monochrome structure.
The upper register contains two tightly compressed encounters. In one panel, a kneeling figure appears beside a suspended body whilst gripping a knife-like object; in the other, two figures collide in an ambiguous scene that oscillates between combat and physical entanglement.
Throughout Haring’s work these patterned bodies often shifted between states of visibility, mutation, vulnerability and transformation. In Blueprint Drawing 9, the dotted form appears simultaneously exposed and empowered, moving unpredictably between victim, aggressor and symbolic authority figure. This ambiguity gives the work a distinctly uneasy psychological tone.
