Roy Lichtenstein Paintings Series For Sale

The Paintings Series arrived in 1984, but the groundwork for it stretches back a decade earlier, to a run of Cubist Still Life paintings Roy Lichtenstein made between 1973 and 1975, directly referencing specific works by Juan Gris and mixing real sand from the beach near his Southampton studio into silver paint to fake the collaged textures of Synthetic Cubism. Sotheby's has described those paintings as a genuine act of pre-emption, sampling and reworking existing art-historical images nearly two decades before that kind of appropriation became its own recognised movement through artists like Sherrie Levine and Louise Lawler. By the time the eight Paintings prints followed in 1984, made through woodcut, lithography and screenprint, Lichtenstein had spent years testing exactly how far a picture could depict another picture before the two became impossible to separate.

That question runs through the whole series, and one image in particular carried it further than the rest. Two Paintings: Sleeping Muse, from 1984, traces back to a monumental painting and sculpture shown together at Leo Castelli Gallery the year before, both built around the same reclining figure. The composition kept resurfacing long after: a collage study and the original painting in 1983, this print in 1984, and, remarkably, a bronze sculpture edition fabricated in 2021, nearly a quarter-century after Lichtenstein's death, made directly from his own original designs. One image, four different physical forms, spread across almost forty years. Several prints in the group stack a depicted painting inside its own frame, that frame inside a rendered wall or interior, building a picture entirely out of nested representations rather than any single flat image, Lichtenstein using the printed medium specifically to depict painting as a subject rather than as the process actually producing what's on the sheet.

The Paintings Series Market In 2026

    An Overview

Prints from the Paintings Series trade from around £30,000 up to around £45,000. Its appeal rests on the self-referential nature of the subject: Lichtenstein turns his own artistic process into the imagery itself, depicting stretched canvases, brushwork and studio ephemera as if caught mid-creation, a knowing wink at the mechanics of painting rather than a scene borrowed from comics or advertising.

That reflexive quality places the series in direct conversation with a long tradition of artists depicting the act of painting itself, stretching back through art history, while filtering it entirely through his own flattened, mechanical style. Demand has held steady across the group, with the strongest results consistently going to prints that show the canvas, stretcher bars or brushwork most clearly, the images collectors most readily recognise as distinctly Lichtenstein.

The Roy Lichtenstein Market in 2026

    An Overview

Lichtenstein's auction record stands at £63.4 million, set by Nurse (1964) at Christie's in 2015 after ten minutes of bidding from New York, Hong Kong and telephone bidders. In May 2026, Anxious Girl (1964), which had been out of public view for more than three decades, sold at Christie's for approximately £36 million, the first work to enter Lichtenstein's top ten highest-value sales since 2020.

His print market reached approximately £13 million at the hammer across 354 lots in 2025, the highest annual sales value and volume of the past five years, up from £7.2 million in 2021. That total spread across his Nudes, his 1960s Pop imagery, his Interiors and his abstract series.

Demand has broadened well beyond his top-tier results, with a small number of exceptional works continuing to account for the majority of total market value each year. Sotheby's held its first live evening sale built entirely around Lichtenstein's own editioned collection in 2025, over ninety works, achieving a white-glove result with every lot finding a buyer, and individual results from that period included Water Lilies With Willows, which sold for £948,967.
