Keith Haring

Blueprint Drawing 2 (Littmann P. 176) by Keith Haring stages a chaotic scene of airborne invasion, where flying saucers descend upon a pile of bodies in an image that feels suspended somewhere between comic strip narrative, dystopian fantasy and urban allegory.
Across the image, saucer-like forms hover overhead projecting dotted beams downward whilst two figures scramble beneath them in states of confusion, confrontation and escape next to a pile of bodies.
Science fiction imagery had surfaced throughout Haring’s career, particularly in works involving technology, mutation and social anxiety. In Blueprint Drawing 2, however, the extraterrestrial imagery feels less playful and more destabilising. The hovering spacecraft and fractured crowd scenes introduce an atmosphere of surveillance and threat, transforming Haring’s familiar figures into participants within a larger scene of disorder and uncertainty.
The segmented structure of the work further heightens this instability, preventing the viewer from settling on any single focal point. Blueprint Drawing 2 captures a darker and more frenetic register within Haring’s later practice. Through monochrome line, crowded figuration and fractured spatial organisation, the work converts science-fiction imagery into an unsettling study of fear, movement and collective tension rendered through Haring’s unmistakable style.
