Keith Haring
42 1/2 x 46 1/2 in
Blueprint Drawing 17 (Littmann P. 183) by Keith Haring reduces the artist’s visual language to a small group of elemental forms: a crawling figure, a barking dog, and a looming black pyramid set against a densely stippled background.
The work is unusually restrained. A vast black pyramid occupies the upper register with an almost oppressive stillness, its hard geometry contrasting sharply with the organic movement of the crawling figure below. To the right, Haring’s barking dog appears cropped at the edge of the frame, its presence immediate yet ambiguous — protective, confrontational, or watchful. The sparse arrangement creates a sense of isolation rarely found in the artist’s more densely populated works.
Unlike the vibrant palette associated with Haring’s murals and Pop Shop imagery, the Blueprint Drawings rely entirely on line, contrast, and repetition. The black-and-white format recalls commercial diagrams, comic strips, and technical drafting, whilst the stippled background introduces texture and spatial depth. This reduction allowed Haring to focus attention on the structure of his imagery itself: the balance between movement and stillness, symbol and space, figure and void.
