Keith Haring
42 1/2 x 53 in
Blueprint Drawing 7, (Littmann P. 178) by Keith Haring depicts a stark confrontation between two figures rendered in his characteristic bold outline style.
The work presents a figure suspended from the ceiling, its hand tied whilst the other figure drives a sword through them. The work's brutal directness mirrors the stark realities Haring witnessed throughout the 1980s, from police brutality to systemic oppression. The raised arms of the dotted figure create an unmistakable gesture of vulnerability and submission, while the horizontal line of the weapon cuts through the centre of the image with menacing clarity. Haring's use of dots to fill the victim's body recalls both comic book aesthetics and the mechanical reproduction processes of mass media, suggesting how violence becomes commodified and distributed through popular culture.
The Blueprint Drawings series represented a significant development in Haring's practice, moving beyond his earlier Pop Shop posters and subway drawings to engage with more explicitly political subject matter.
