Keith Haring

Blueprint Drawing 11 (Littmann P. 180) by Keith Haring arranges sixteen separate compartments into a tightly ordered grid that revisits many of the artist’s most recognisable symbols through repetition, variation and fragmentation.
Produced in 1990 as a screenprint, the work reworks imagery developed throughout Haring’s earlier subway drawings, paintings and public murals, reducing his to a concentrated monochrome sequence of recurring forms and gestures.
The Blueprint Drawings series marked a significant shift away from the saturated colour and expansive surfaces associated with much of Haring’s 1980s output. Here, black contour and stippled texture alone construct the work. The absence of colour places greater emphasis on spacing, repetition and the architecture of line itself, revealing the underlying structure that sustained Haring’s style across different media and contexts throughout the decade.
Blueprint Drawing 11 demonstrates Haring approaching his own imagery retrospectively, reorganising familiar symbols into a more analytical and modular format during the final phase of his life. Through repetition, serial variation and controlled fragmentation, the work transforms his public iconography into a dense visual index of movement, behaviour and symbolic communication.
