Keith Haring
42 1/2 x 47 in
Blueprint Drawing 15 (Littmann P. 182) by Keith Haring combines imagery of spectacle, technology and worship within a sharply divided three-part work.
The work revisits themes and symbols that had appeared throughout Haring’s earlier subway drawings, paintings and public projects, but restructures them here within a colder and more fragmented monochrome environment.
The upper register functions almost like a stage or broadcast platform. A silhouetted figure raises a hammer-like form above a crowd of densely packed bodies whilst surrounded by screens, symbols and electronic imagery. A dog stands nearby, television monitors display distorted figures and abstract signs float across the background alongside atomic structures and directional marks.
The compartment feels overloaded with signals and competing forms of communication, echoing the accelerated media environment that increasingly occupied Haring’s later work. Beneath this crowded theatrical scene, two isolated horizontal panels introduce a sudden shift in tone. Reclining bodies lie alone within sparse, empty spaces stripped almost entirely of surrounding imagery. These lower compartments interrupt the visual intensity of the upper section and create a stark contrast between collective spectacle and individual withdrawal.
Blueprint Drawing 15 reveals Haring pushing toward a more fragmented examination of media, performance and human isolation during the final phase of his career. Through abrupt shifts in scale, compressed figuration and compartmentalised staging, the work transforms familiar public symbols into a dense visual environment suspended between broadcast spectacle, social ritual and psychological retreat.
