Blueprint Drawing 16 (Littmann P. 183) by Keith Haring reduces Haring’s to a single destabilised moment: a falling figure suspended against the rigid geometry of a stepped structure.

The work revisits imagery and ideas that had surfaced repeatedly throughout Haring’s earlier subway drawings and paintings, but compresses them here into one of the most stripped-back images within the Blueprint Drawings series. A simplified body tumbles diagonally across the image whilst gripping a radiant baton-like form that emits short bursts of energy. Beneath it, a sharply angled staircase or pyramid rises upward through a dense field of stippled texture, creating a severe geometric counterweight to the instability of the figure above. Motion lines surrounding the body intensify the sensation of sudden descent, giving the image an abrupt physical immediacy despite its minimal means.

Throughout the Blueprint Drawings, Haring translated earlier motifs into monochrome schematic forms that foregrounded line, spacing and structural organisation. Here, the absence of colour heightens the stark contrast between the mechanical precision of the stepped architecture and the vulnerability of the tumbling figure.

The stippled surfaces evoke printed diagrams, halftone reproduction and technical drafting, reinforcing the sense that the image functions almost like a visual notation of instability or breakdown. Blueprint Drawing 16 reveals Haring pushing toward maximum compression during the final phase of his printmaking practice. Through radical simplification, sharp geometric tension and suspended movement, the work transforms one of his familiar animated figures into an image of precarious balance poised between collapse, resistance and motion.
