Jean-Michel Basquiat Portfolio I Series For Sale

Portfolio I brings together four of Jean-Michel Basquiat's most recognisable images and motifs in a single posthumous print series: the crowned figure of Per Capita, the soap-advertisement grid of Rinso, the searching, x-rayed body of Ernok, and the stark skull imagery of Untitled (Head). All four draw on paintings Basquiat made in 1983, one of the defining years of his career, though the prints themselves weren't published until his estate issued them in 2001, four years after his death, giving collectors access to some of his most iconic visual language in an editioned form rarely available outside major auctions and museum holdings.

Per Capita takes its imagery from Basquiat's own 1981 painting of the same name, built around one of his most recurring symbols: a three-pointed crown, placed here directly above the word "Asbestos." Basquiat used the crown throughout his career to elevate figures he admired, often Black athletes and artists overlooked or undervalued by the wider art world, effectively crowning them as royalty and placing himself among their ranks. Positioned over a word tied to industrial harm and hidden cost, the crown in Per Capita reads as something closer to a claim about survival and worth measured against a system built to extract value from people rather than honour them. Rinso takes on that same territory from a different angle, borrowing its structure from a real historical soap advertisement, stamping "SLOGAN" across the composition alongside a copyright symbol, its gridded layout reading simultaneously as stacked bars of soap and rows of bricks, a pointed confrontation with how racist caricature and commercial advertising moved together through American consumer culture. Ernok and Untitled (Head) round out the set, the latter returning to the skull and skeletal imagery that had already become one of Basquiat's defining subjects by this point in his career.

    Basquiat Portfolio I

    A Market Overview

Jean-Michel Basquiat Portfolio I was published in 2001 by the Basquiat estate in an edition of 85 — the inaugural print release following the artist's death in 1988, and a defining statement about how his imagery would continue to reach collectors. The four works — Per Capita, Rinso, Ernok and Untitled (Head) — derive from his 1983 paintings, placing them within his most commercially significant period.

Individual works are available from approximately £65,000, with complete sets in the region of £350,000. Ernok achieved over £135,000 at auction in 2023 — a result that confirmed the strength of demand at the upper end of the series. As the first of the estate portfolios, Portfolio I carries an inherent historical significance beyond its individual compositions: it represents the estate's opening statement, against which all subsequent releases have been measured with demand remaining consistent since release.

    The Basquiat Market in 2026

    An Overview

Jean-Michel Basquiat is among the most valuable artists ever to appear at auction. His imagery — crowns, anatomical figures, layered text, the collision of street culture and art history — has become part of the visual language of the last forty years, recognised and sought by collectors across generations and geographies. Demand has remained consistent and has reached the highest levels of the market: his 1982 Untitled sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby's New York in May 2017, at the time a world record for an American artist, and In This Case (1983) achieved $93.1 million at Christie's New York in May 2021, with multiple other paintings crossing the $50 million threshold in recent seasons.

His print catalogue divides into two distinct categories. Lifetime works — produced and signed by the artist during his career — carry direct studio provenance; the Anatomy series of 1982, printed in an edition of eighteen, has recorded average annual price growth of 9.67% across 38 auction appearances. Estate editions, published since 2001 and authenticated by the artist's sisters, vary in size and scope across each release. Individual works have traded at auction between £15,000 and over £135,000 depending on series and imagery. Recent results confirm the depth and breadth of demand: the Daros Suite peaked at £130,000 at Sotheby's New York in April 2025; a complete Anatomy set achieved £570,000 at Christie's in May 2026; and Printer's Proof examples from the Superhero Portfolio — released only in 2022 — were estimated at $150,000–$250,000 at Sotheby's in April 2025, confirming that even recent estate additions attract serious collector attention from the outset.

The continuity of demand, the strength of the imagery and the depth of the market across every tier of his catalogue make Basquiat one of the most serious acquisitions a collector can make today.
