Jean-Michel Basquiat Superhero Portfolio Prints For Sale

In a 1983 interview with the critic Henry Geldzahler for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine, Jean-Michel Basquiat was asked what he used to draw as a kid. His answer was unusually candid for someone already being treated as the art world's newest star: "I was a really lousy artist as a kid. Too abstract expressionist... really messy. I'd never win painting contests. I remember losing to a guy who did a perfect Spider-Man." Asked whether he'd ever been happy with his childhood work, he was just as blunt: "No, not at all. I really wanted to be the best artist in the class, but my work had a really ugly edge to it." That same rough, unresolved quality he lost points for as a boy became, within a few years, exactly what made his adult work so distinctive, and comic-book heroes never really left his vocabulary. A 1978 postcard collage, JFK, Thor, Giant-Man & Captain America, signed simply "JEAN B '78," shows Batman, Superman, Thor and Captain America already turning up years before his first gallery show.

Four screenprints make up the Superhero Portfolio: Riddle Me This, A Panel of Experts, Piano Lesson and Flash In Naples, all made between 1982 and 1987 but not published until Basquiat's estate issued them in 2022. Riddle Me This pulls from Batman's world through the Riddler, while Flash In Naples brings in The Flash, comic-book imagery layered under his usual scrawled text, crossed-out words and fragmented figures rather than any clean retelling of a story. The edition of 85 is stamped and signed on the reverse by his sisters, Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, who administer his estate. Where the crown motif that runs through so much of Basquiat's work spent a career elevating real people, musicians, athletes, artists he admired, into a kind of self-made royalty, this portfolio turns that same instinct back toward the fictional heroes he'd once tried and failed to draw as a boy losing to a classmate's Spider-Man.

    Basquiat Superhero Portfolio

    An Overview

The Superhero Portfolio was published by the estate in 2022, drawn from paintings Basquiat made between 1982 and 1987 at 57 Great Jones Street — the New York studio he shared with Andy Warhol and the crucible of some of his most exuberant work. The four prints — Riddle Me This, A Panel of Experts, Piano Lesson and Flash in Naples — capture the irreverence and visual intensity that define his mid-decade output, and the portfolio has established itself quickly as one of the estate's most sought-after recent releases.

Individual prints trade from around £45,000, with complete sets commanding a substantial premium. The imagery draws directly from the paintings that underpin some of Basquiat's most recognisable iconography, and the portfolio sits at the more accessible entry point to the estate print market without compromising on the scale and ambition of the source works. As with all estate editions, every work is stamped and signed on the reverse by the artist's sisters.

    The Basquiat Market in 2026

    An Overview

Jean-Michel Basquiat is among the most valuable artists ever to appear at auction. His imagery — crowns, anatomical figures, layered text, the collision of street culture and art history — has become part of the visual language of the last forty years, recognised and sought by collectors across generations and geographies. Demand has remained consistent and has reached the highest levels of the market: his 1982 Untitled sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby's New York in May 2017, at the time a world record for an American artist, and In This Case (1983) achieved $93.1 million at Christie's New York in May 2021, with multiple other paintings crossing the $50 million threshold in recent seasons.

His print catalogue divides into two distinct categories. Lifetime works — produced and signed by the artist during his career — carry direct studio provenance; the Anatomy series of 1982, printed in an edition of eighteen, has recorded average annual price growth of 9.67% across 38 auction appearances. Estate editions, published since 2001 and authenticated by the artist's sisters, vary in size and scope across each release. Individual works have traded at auction between £15,000 and over £135,000 depending on series and imagery. Recent results confirm the depth and breadth of demand: the Daros Suite peaked at £130,000 at Sotheby's New York in April 2025; a complete Anatomy set achieved £570,000 at Christie's in May 2026; and Printer's Proof examples from the Superhero Portfolio — released only in 2022 — were estimated at $150,000–$250,000 at Sotheby's in April 2025, confirming that even recent estate additions attract serious collector attention from the outset.

The continuity of demand, the strength of the imagery and the depth of the market across every tier of his catalogue make Basquiat one of the most serious acquisitions a collector can make today.
