Jean-Michel Basquiat Singles

These prints don't belong to any single named portfolio. Instead, this selection brings together individual, highly collectable images the estate has released on their own terms over the years, each pulled from a different point in Basquiat's short but extraordinarily dense working life. Flexible, released in 2016, is based on a 1984 panel painting made from deconstructed fence timber at his studio in Venice, California, depicting a griot, the storyteller and keeper of oral history in West African tradition, a subject that let Basquiat work through questions of history, memory and the artist's own role as a kind of modern griot himself. The original painting sold at auction for $45.3 million in 2018, one of the clearest markers of how far his reputation has travelled since his death.

King Alphonso, released more recently in 2025, takes on a different kind of history entirely, referencing Alfonso XIII, the last ruling monarch of Spain, whose colonial-era views earned him the nickname "El Africano." Basquiat sets his own three-pointed crown directly above the king's head, a gesture the artist Francesco Clemente, a close friend, once explained in terms specific to Basquiat's own iconography: "Jean-Michel's crown has three peaks, for his three royal lineages: the poet, the musician, the great boxing champion." Placing that crown over a controversial European monarch rather than one of his usual subjects, Black athletes, musicians, artists, gives the piece a sharper, more pointed edge than most of his royal imagery.

Hollywood Africans, Odours of Punt and Phooey round out the group, each pulled from a different year and a different corner of Basquiat's practice, together giving collectors access to individual, standout images that were never intended to sit inside a wider series in the first place.

    Basquiat Singles

    A Market Overview

The singles represent the estate's most selective releases — works published individually rather than as part of a portfolio, each chosen for the singular strength of its source painting. Spanning publications from 2015 to 2026, the group includes some of Basquiat's most recognisable and critically debated compositions: Hollywood Africans, his unflinching examination of race and representation in the entertainment industry; Flexible and M, both drawn from the griot paintings made in his Venice, California studio in 1984; Odours of Punt and Phooey, which demonstrate the full range of his visual and conceptual ambition; and King Alphonso, published in 2025. The most recent addition is M, released by Flatiron Editions in 2026 and already sold out at source — confirming the immediate collector appetite that now greets every new estate release.

Demand across the group is consistently strong. These are the works that collectors who know the market seek out first — the estate's own implicit endorsement of the source material, released one at a time precisely because each can carry the weight. Prices range from around £40,000 for more recent releases to over £90,000 for the largest and most sought-after works. As with all estate editions, every print is stamped and signed on the reverse by the artist's sisters.

    The Basquiat Market in 2026

    An Overview

Jean-Michel Basquiat is among the most valuable artists ever to appear at auction. His imagery — crowns, anatomical figures, layered text, the collision of street culture and art history — has become part of the visual language of the last forty years, recognised and sought by collectors across generations and geographies. Demand has remained consistent and has reached the highest levels of the market: his 1982 Untitled sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby's New York in May 2017, at the time a world record for an American artist, and In This Case (1983) achieved $93.1 million at Christie's New York in May 2021, with multiple other paintings crossing the $50 million threshold in recent seasons.

His print catalogue divides into two distinct categories. Lifetime works — produced and signed by the artist during his career — carry direct studio provenance; the Anatomy series of 1982, printed in an edition of eighteen, has recorded average annual price growth of 9.67% across 38 auction appearances. Estate editions, published since 2001 and authenticated by the artist's sisters, vary in size and scope across each release. Individual works have traded at auction between £15,000 and over £135,000 depending on series and imagery. Recent results confirm the depth and breadth of demand: the Daros Suite peaked at £130,000 at Sotheby's New York in April 2025; a complete Anatomy set achieved £570,000 at Christie's in May 2026; and Printer's Proof examples from the Superhero Portfolio — released only in 2022 — were estimated at $150,000–$250,000 at Sotheby's in April 2025, confirming that even recent estate additions attract serious collector attention from the outset.

The continuity of demand, the strength of the imagery and the depth of the market across every tier of his catalogue make Basquiat one of the most serious acquisitions a collector can make today.
