Keith Haring Pop Shop II Set For Sale: Facts | Meaning | Market Demand

Pop Shop II is a portfolio about movement: four screenprints made in 1988 in which Keith Haring’s figures stretch, bend and wave far beyond anything a body could manage, with no features and no visible gender, so that all their personality comes from colour and line. He had been working towards the idea since 1978, when his journal records him becoming “much more aware of movement”, and his biographer Brad Gooch took a Haring statement as the epigraph to his life of the artist: “Your line is your personality”.

That idea has a Japanese thread running through it. Gooch notes Haring’s fascination with Japanese calligraphy, where the same letters and symbols reveal the character of each hand, and Haring himself likened his own signature to a form of writing “similar to Eastern calligraphy”. Japan took to him early: his first solo exhibition in Tokyo was at Galerie Watari in 1983, and in January 1988, the year of this portfolio, he returned to open a shop in Aoyama, painting its interior in about a day and designing products with Japanese traditions in mind, from paper fans to rice bowls. A museum devoted entirely to his work, the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, opened in Yamanashi in 2007.

Read in order, the four prints work as a sequence, opening and closing on two figures merging into one while pink, blue and yellow shift in harmony from sheet to sheet, and in the second a coral figure seems to dance across water in an image that recalls Christ walking on the sea. It was a joyful, busy year for Haring, who also designed a label for Château Mouton Rothschild and painted a mural for the White House Easter Egg Roll, and for collectors Pop Shop II is that mood in print: his most exuberant line, in colours that never keep still.

The Keith Haring Market in 2026

    An Overview

Keith Haring offers collectors a compelling combination of institutional standing, enormous global recognition and a finite supply of original editions. His work belongs to major museum collections, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, while his imagery is recognised far beyond the art world. For buyers, this brings the opportunity to collect an artist whose cultural importance is established and whose appeal reaches across generations and international markets.

That recognition is supported by substantial auction results. Haring’s record stands at $6.54 million, while all 31 subway drawings from a major private collection sold for a combined $9.2 million in 2024, demonstrating exceptional demand for this important group. His prints continue to appear consistently at international auctions, providing an established history of transactions against which collectors can assess an acquisition.

Throughout Haring’s printed output, collectors can own the imagery that made him recognised around the world, in original editions whose supply is fixed. That balance of broad cultural appeal and limited availability is central to the attraction. A carefully chosen print offers visual impact, a place within an important artist’s career and an established auction history against which to assess its price. For collectors, this creates an exciting opportunity to build a collection with both artistic substance and the potential for long-term appreciation.
