Keith Haring Untitled 1–4 (1987) Portfolio For Sale: Facts | Meaning | Market Demand

Untitled 1–4 is a portfolio of four lithographs that Keith Haring made in 1987 in red, yellow, blue and black, in the middle of one of his busiest years. In 1987 he painted an 88-foot mural on the exterior stairwell of the Necker-Enfants Malades children’s hospital in Paris, designed a carousel for André Heller’s Luna Luna amusement park in Hamburg and completed We the Youth in Philadelphia to mark the bicentennial of the Constitution. Brad Gooch, author of Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring, says that “Haring tries kind of everything”, and the portfolio is one of his quieter experiments, four prints on a more intimate scale than the murals.

The primary colours suggest play, but the subject is heavier. The set is read as an allegory about television and violence: in one print a lone figure sits inside a television set and covers its eyes, a figure that refuses to look at what the screen shows, and in another a figure has a hole through its stomach, one of Haring’s most recurrent images. He recalled growing up in America in the 1960s, learning about the war in Vietnam from Life magazine and watching riots on television, and the television is a symbol of mass media and the news cycle throughout his work. For collectors, the portfolio pairs Haring’s simplest palette with one of his most outspoken subjects.

The Keith Haring Market in 2026

    An Overview

Keith Haring offers collectors a compelling combination of institutional standing, enormous global recognition and a finite supply of original editions. His work belongs to major museum collections, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, while his imagery is recognised far beyond the art world. For buyers, this brings the opportunity to collect an artist whose cultural importance is established and whose appeal reaches across generations and international markets.

That recognition is supported by substantial auction results. Haring’s record stands at $6.54 million, while all 31 subway drawings from a major private collection sold for a combined $9.2 million in 2024, demonstrating exceptional demand for this important group. His prints continue to appear consistently at international auctions, providing an established history of transactions against which collectors can assess an acquisition.

Throughout Haring’s printed output, collectors can own the imagery that made him recognised around the world, in original editions whose supply is fixed. That balance of broad cultural appeal and limited availability is central to the attraction. A carefully chosen print offers visual impact, a place within an important artist’s career and an established auction history against which to assess its price. For collectors, this creates an exciting opportunity to build a collection with both artistic substance and the potential for long-term appreciation.
