Untitled 1–6 is a portfolio of six lithographs that Keith Haring made in 1982, the year of his first solo exhibition at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York and his inclusion in Documenta 7 in Kassel, and it is his first portfolio of published prints. He was twenty-four. Since 1980 he had been drawing in chalk on the black paper panels that covered expired advertisements in the subway, thousands of drawings that commuters saw and nobody could own, and the portfolio fixes that imagery on paper in black and white: barking dogs, flying saucers, television sets and crucified figures.
Haring described the dogs and saucers in terms of power: in different combinations, he said, they were about “the difference between human power and the power of animal instinct”. The crucifixion is the portfolio’s strongest narrative, and it is not a conventional one. The figure is genderless and faceless, a victim of modern society rather than Jesus, and a subway drawing of the same year puts a crucified figure inside a television screen. Robert Farris Thompson described that image in a line: “The cross appears on television”. For collectors, Untitled 1–6 is the point at which a practice built on ephemeral public drawings became something that could be owned, in the stark black and white of the chalk drawings.
